Sanitizing and deodorizing your garbage disposal.

Having a smelly garbage disposal is not fun. Yes, they carry bacteria in them from the grease and food scraps that is put down them. You might flush while you are running the Garbage disposal unit but every so often we really need to try to disinfect and deodorize them to keep them smelling fresh. And, also to prevent harmful bacteria from breeding in our kitchen sink.

See below on how to sanitize and deodorize your garbage disposal and remember please do not put your hands down in there.

  • Pour baking soda and vinegar into the disposal, let it fizz for several minutes, then run cold water and turn on the disposal.

  • Put ice cubes and baking soda into the disposal, add vinegar, let it fizz for 10 minutes, then pour boiling water and grind some lemons in the disposal.

  • Pour vinegar and baking soda into the disposal, let it fizz for 15 minutes, then run cold water and turn on the disposal.

  • Plug up the disposal, fill the sink with hot water (65C or 149F) and dish soap, pull the stopper out, then pour ice cubes and rock salt into the disposal. Most hot water in residential dwellings is not much above 120 Degrees F or around 51C.

The World Health Organization (WHO)Trusted Source notes that bacteria is rapidly killed at temperatures above 149°F (65°C). This temperature is below that of boiling water or even a simmer. Running the garbage disposal while pouring the water above 149F in should happen for roughly between 30 seconds to a minute.
